What Is the Association between Vitamins B9 and B12 and Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

• Vitamin B9 and vitamin B12 can lower the blood level of homocysteine. High blood levels of homocysteine are a known risk factor for age-related macular degeneration.

• Homocysteine is a strong oxidant that can induce atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases, increasing the risk of age-related macular degeneration. Supplementation with vitamins B9 and B12 lowers the blood level of homocysteine and reduces the risk of age- related macular degeneration.

Meta-analysis

• Vitamin B9 and vitamin B12. A meta-analysis of 11 research articles studied the association between vitamins B9 and B12 and age-related macular degeneration in 1,072 patients with age-related macular degeneration and 1,202 healthy individuals. Analysis confirmed that patients with age-related macular degeneration had higher blood levels of homocysteine and lower blood levels of vitamin B9 and vitamin B12 compared to healthy controls.

Recommendation

• Prevention. For people aged 55 and older at risk of age-related macular degeneration, take daily 400 mcg vitamin B9 (8) and 100 mcg vitamin B12 (9).

• Treatment. For age-related macular degeneration patients, take daily 800 mcg vitamin B9 (8) and 400 mcg vitamin B12 (9).
