What Is the Association Between Vitamin D and Melanoma

What Is the Association between Vitamin D and Melanoma

• Blood levels of vitamin D are lower in melanoma patients compared to healthy individuals. Maintaining higher blood levels of vitamin D decreases the risk of melanoma. Sun exposure makes the skin produce vitamin D, but excessive sun exposure can lead to melanoma.

• Vitamin D inhibits the proliferation and migration of melanoma cells. A low blood level of vitamin D exacerbates the production of inflammatory cytokines and the proliferation and migration of melanoma cells.

• Vitamin D. Twenty research papers investigated the association between vitamin D and melanoma in 1,420 melanoma patients. A lower blood level of vitamin D was found to be associated with a higher risk of melanoma.

Recommendation

• Prevention. For people at risk of melanoma, take daily 2,000 IU vitamin A (1) and 800 IU vitamin D3 (11).

• Treatment. For melanoma patients, take daily 5,000 IU vitamin A (1) and 2,000 IU vitamin D3 (11).
