• Vitamin D regulates the production of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin. Vitamin D deficiency reduces dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain, leading to depression.

• According to historical records dating back 2,000 years ago, physicians knew that sun exposure could treat patients with depression. Upon sun exposure, the skin produces vitamin D. High blood levels of vitamin D decrease the risk of depression, and vitamin D deficiency is associated with depression.

A meta-analysis of 15 randomized controlled trials investigated the relationship between vitamin D and depression. The result has shown that supplementation with vitamin D at a daily dose of 800 IU significantly decreased the symptoms of depression. The efficacy of vitamin D supplementation was found to be similar to that of antidepressant drugs.
