What Is the Association between Vitamin D and Colorectal Cancer?

• Vitamin D has anticancer properties. It enhances the differentiation of the epithelial cells in the colon and rectum to prevent them from transforming into cancerous cells and inhibits the formation of new blood vessels in cancerous lesions.

• Patients with colorectal cancer often have low blood levels of vitamin D compared to healthy individuals. Studies have shown that higher blood levels of vitamin D lowered the risk of colorectal cancer. In addition, maintaining high blood levels of vitamin D reduced the risk of mortality in patients with colorectal cancer.

Vitamin D. Four clinical research reports explored the relationship between vitamin D and the survival of colorectal cancer patients in 2,575 cases. Maintaining blood levels of vitamin D at 40 ng/ml or higher was shown to significantly decrease mortality in patients with colorectal cancer.
