• Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for supporting the balance of calcium and phosphate levels in the bloodstream. Vitamin D enhances the mineralization of calcium phosphate and increases bone density. Vitamin D deficiency decreases the mineralization of calcium phosphate and reduces bone density, thus elevating the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures.

Meta-analysis

• Vitamin D. A meta-analysis of eight randomized controlled clinical trial papers investigated the relationship between calcium and vitamin D supplements and the incident rate of bone fracture in 30,970 individuals, including 195 hip-fracture patients and 2,231 other bone-fracture patients. The data confirmed that long-term supplementation with calcium and vitamin D significantly reduced the risk of bone fracture by 15% and the risk of hip fracture by 30%. In this analysis, the daily doses of supplements were 1,000– 1,200 mg of calcium and 400–800 IU of vitamin D for one to seven years.

Recommendation

• Prevention. For people at risk of bone fracture, take daily 500 mg calcium (14) and 800 IU vitamin D3 (11).

• Treatment. For bone fracture patients, take daily 1,000 mg calcium (14) and 2,000 IU vitamin D3 (11).
