• Vitamin B9 is an essential nutrient that supports the endothelial cell layer in blood vessels. In addition, vitamin B9 can reduce blood levels of homocysteine. High blood levels of homocysteine increase the risk of coronary artery disease and other cardiovascular diseases.

• Insufficient blood levels of vitamin B9 are common in patients with coronary artery disease. Sufficient dietary intake of vitamin B9 was shown to alleviate the symptoms of coronary artery disease.

Vitamin B9. A meta-analysis of six randomized controlled trials studied the relationship between vitamin B9 and coronary artery disease in 377 coronary artery disease patients, including 191 patients in the vitamin B9 group and 186 patients in the placebo group. The studies were each two to three months in duration. Analysis has shown that patients in the vitamin B9 group had higher elasticity of coronary arteries and lower blood levels of homocysteine compared to the placebo group. The data revealed that intake of vitamin B9 at a dose of 5 mg daily for four weeks alleviated the symptoms of coronary artery disease.
