What Is the Association Between Vitamin B6 and Breast Cancer

What Is the Association between Vitamin B6 and Breast Cancer?

• B vitamins—such as vitamins B6, B9, and B12—are involved in one-carbon metabolism, a biochemical pathway that supports thesynthesis and methylation of DNA, and the maintenance of the structural integrity of chromosomes. Vitamin B6 deficiency leads to insufficient methylation of DNA, a salient characteristic of cancer cells. Insufficient gene methylation negatively affects the expression of tumor suppressor genes and increases the risk of tumor transformation.

• Sufficient dietary intake of vitamin B6 was found to decrease the risk of ER-positive breast cancer.

A meta-analysis of 14 research papers studied the relationship between vitamin B6 and breast cancer in 14,260 breast cancer patients. Analysis confirmed that high blood levels of vitamin B6 reduced the risk of breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women.
