• Vitamin B12 supports one-carbon metabolism, which facilitates the synthesis and methylation of DNA. Insufficient methylation is common in the genes of cancerous cells. Vitamin B12 deficiency may lead to insufficient methylation of DNA in the epithelial cells of the colon and rectum and increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

Vitamin B12. A meta-analysis of 17 clinical studies investigated the association between vitamin B12 and colorectal cancer in 10,601 participants. The data have shown that sufficient dietary intake of vitamin B12 decreased the risk of colorectal cancer. Increasing daily intake of vitamin B12 by 4–5 mcg significantly reduced the risk of colorectal cancer.
