• Patients with autoimmune thyroid disease often have lower blood levels of selenium compared to healthy individuals. Selenium is a cofactor that supports enzymes involved in the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Supplementation with selenium was found to significantly reduce autoimmune antibody production in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease.

• Selenium is a cofactor that supports the activity of glutathione peroxidase, an enzyme that degrades hydrogen peroxide. Excessive hydrogen peroxide production can induce oxidative damage to thyroid hormone–producing cells and increase the risk of autoimmune thyroid disease.

Meta-analysis

• Vitamin D. A meta-analysis of 20 research papers explored the relationship between vitamin D and autoimmune thyroid disease in 3,603 individuals, including 1,782 autoimmune thyroid disease patients and 1,821 healthy controls. Analysis confirmed that the blood levels of vitamin D were lower in autoimmune thyroid disease patients compared to healthy controls.

• Selenium. Nine research papers investigated the efficacy of selenium supplementation in the treatment of autoimmune thyroid disease in 787 autoimmune thyroid disease patients. Supplementation with selenium was found to significantly lower the blood level of autoimmune antibodies and improve the moods and emotional well-being of patients with autoimmune thyroid disease.

Recommendation

• Prevention. For people at risk of autoimmune thyroid disease, take daily 800 IU vitamin D3 (11) and 50 mcg selenium (26).

• Treatment. For autoimmune thyroid disease patients, take daily 2,000 IU vitamin D3 (11) and 100 mcg selenium (26).
