• Sufficient dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids decreases the risk of cognitive impairment in elderly people. Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids improves memory and alleviates the symptoms of cognitive impairment.

• Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions. Omega-3 fatty acids regulate the membrane fluidity in the cell membrane of the neurons and control the traffic of substances being transported in and out of the neurons.

• Omega-3 fatty acids. Six randomized controlled trials investigated the relationship between omega-3 fatty acids and cognitive impairment in elderly people. The daily doses of omega-3 fatty acids were 400–1,800 mg for 40 months. The meta-analysis confirmed that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids lowered the incidence rate of cognitive impairment in elderly individuals compared to the placebo control.

• Omega-3 fatty acids. A meta-analysis of 15 research papers studied the relationship between omega-3 fatty acids and memory decline. The doses of omega-3 fatty acid supplements were 1–2 g daily for four to six months, and the participants were all 18 years old or older. Analysis confirmed that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids significantly improved memory and prevented memory decline.
