What Is the Association Between Calcium and Bone Fractures

What Is the Association between Calcium and Bone Fractures?

• Calcium binds phosphate to form calcium phosphate, which is deposited into the bone matrix through the mineralization process. Calcium deficiency due to insufficient dietary intake or pathological factors can lead to bone loss and weakened bones, and it can increase the incidence rate of bone fractures after accidental falls.

A bone fracture is a condition in which the continuity of the bone is interrupted. Two major types of bone fractures include a fracture caused by strong exterior pressure and a fracture caused by pathological changes in the bones, such as in osteoporosis, called a "pathologic fracture." In this chapter, we are concerned with pathologic fractures. An estimated 9 million bone fractures occur due to osteoporosis every year worldwide.
