Liver cancer is caused by the transformation of hepatic cells to malignant cells in the liver. Infections by hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses and heavy alcohol consumption are the major causative factors of liver cancer. In the US, it is estimated that about 39,230 people will be diagnosed with liver cancer this year. The five-year survival rate of liver cancer is only 17%. The incidence rate of liver cancer is much higher in Asia compared to North America and Europe because hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections are more prevalent in Asia.
