What Are the Symptoms of Iodine Deficiency

What Are the Symptoms of Iodine Deficiency?

• Iodine deficiency hampers brain development in infants and children and, in severe cases, causes mental disorders in children. Iodine deficiency gives rise to enlarged thyroid glands in adults. Long-term iodine deficiency could lead to thyroid cancer. In the past, people who lived in mountainous regions, such as in Mexico and the Great Lakes region in the US, had a severe iodine deficiency, which was largely resolved after table salt fortified with iodine became available in those regions. Globally, more than 2 billion people still live in an iodine-deficient environment.

Prevention and Treatment of Diseases

• Prevention. Iodine supplements may prevent radiation-induced thyroid cancer.

• Treatment. Iodine supplements may treat cyclical mastalgia.

What Types of Drugs May Interact with Iodine?

• Antithyroid medications. Taking high-dose iodine supplements together with an antithyroid drug can cause hypothyroidism.

• Antihypertensive drugs. Supplementation with iodine may lead to hyperkalemia in hypertensive patients who take angiotensin- converting enzyme inhibitor medications.

• Potassium diuretics. Taking potassium diuretics together with potassium iodine may cause hyperkalemia.
