What Are the Causes of Obesity?

• Energy imbalance. The body converts food into energy. Energy balance means energy from food intake is equal to the energy needed for the body. Obesity occurs when energy from food intake is more than the energy needed for the body. Contrary to that, weight loss occurs when energy from food intake is less than the energy needed for the body. Energy balance is required for body weight to be stable.

• Little physical exercise. Lack of physical exercise is common in modern lifestyles, as people watch television for hours, spend time on their computers, and drive instead of walk whenever possible. Lack of physical exercise induces energy imbalance and obesity.

• Sweets. Various food items and beverages contain high levels of sugar. Sucrose is the most commonly found sugar in foods and beverages. Sucrose is made of glucose and fructose. Glucose is converted to energy in all organs and tissues, including the brain, heart, liver, muscles, and others. Fructose is metabolized only in the liver, where it is converted into fat, part of which is accumulated in the liver, potentially causing fatty liver disease, and part of which is transported via the bloodstream and stored in fat tissues, such as in the abdomen and hips, causing obesity.

• Family and genetics. Obesity is caused by the interplay between genes and lifestyle, including eating disorders. Individuals who inherit obesity-related genes may have an increased risk of obesity, but it does not mean that they will inevitably suffer from the disease. Obesity is caused by both genetics and environmental factors. For example, habitual consumption of fried foods can trigger the expression of predisposed obesity-related genes and increase the risk of obesity.
